Carl E. Nelson graduated from Amherst College in 1973 and from Dartmouth College, with a master’s degree, in 1975. After a year of post-graduate work in metamorphic petrology at the University of California, Los Angeles, he began his exploration career with the Anaconda Copper Company working in the western United States as staff geologist. In 1980, Mr. Nelson moved to Homestake, then North America’s largest gold mining company, where he took a position as Research Geologist. Using the McLaughlin deposit (3.2 Moz gold) as a working laboratory, Mr. Nelson developed a genetic model and exploration tools for gold mineralization in hot spring environments. In 1987, Mr. Nelson began his research work on metallic mineral deposits of the Caribbean region under a one-year Faculty Grant from the Fulbright Foundation to the School of Geology at the University of Costa Rica. In 1988, he founded Recursos del Caribe, S.A., a consulting firm that has provided services to mining and exploration companies, government agencies, and the United Nations. Beginning in 2004, with metals prices in the midst of a sustained rise, Carl shifted his emphasis to the launching of junior mining companies. He served as the first president and CEO of Bellhaven Copper and Gold (2004-2006), as vice-president of Riverside Resources (2006-2008) and as a co-founder of Atico Mining (2010-2012). Carl’s career has taken him to the Great Basin of the United States in the search for Carlin-type deposits, around the circum-Pacific rim in the search for hot spring-related epithermal gold deposits and, for the past several decades, to the Caribbean region and Colombia. He continues to refine his understanding of the origin of mineral deposits, especially the 35Moz Pueblo Viejo gold district of the Dominican Republic. In recent years, he has begun to enjoy the pleasure of working with graduate students in the selection and development of their research topics.
